Charity work
We’re proud to support worthy causes across the world, helping those in need in the communities that host our groups. Part of what makes Edwin Doran Sports Tours so rewarding is meeting local people and embracing their culture. Often, this highlights how charity work can be of huge benefit to local communities.
Why we do it
Whether your team is going on tour to Malaysia, Argentina or Jamaica, we encourage all our groups to support charitable causes in the destinations they visit and give something back to the local communities. We believe this enriches the trip and provides students with a unique life experience through their love of sports.
Our charity projects
Some of our projects have sprung from connections made by players on our sports trips, while others enrich the relationships between Edwin Doran and hosting schools or the wider community. Here are some of the projects we got involved with over the years.
The Goedgedacht Trust, South Africa
Set on an old Cape Dutch farm, Goedgedacht is a busy community development centre that tackles poverty amongst rural children and youths. Many of the children’s parents have fallen foul of the ‘dop system’ on the wine farms of the Western Cape, whereby workers are given alcohol as a ‘benefit’ of employment, and the Goedgedacht Trust contributes to the transformation of these disadvantaged families and communities.
Inspire Children and Youth, South Africa
Inspire Children and Youth, run by the lovely Ingrid Lestrade, is a non-profit organisation based in the Western Cape of South Africa that provides food, shelter, toilets and a range of activities/projects to help restore human dignity on rural farms and create safe spaces for children and young people to thrive.
The Foundation of Goodness, Sri Lanka
Following the devastating 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka that devastated thousands of lives, we have helped the Foundation of Goodness, a non-governmental organisation which has worked extensively to develop a rural community development model, delivering a wide range of programmes such as Women’s Empowerment, Children & Youth Development, Special Needs, Environment and Water and Sports Development.
Tsunami relief, Sri Lanka
Our touring sides have also helped to rebuild several playgrounds at Sri Lankan schools following the devastating tsunami of 2004, and Edwin Doran Sports Tours also contributes to the distribution of sporting kits amongst local communities.
Lelapa restaurant, Langa Township, South Africa
We are proud to have helped Sheila Mahloane, a charismatic local entrepreneur, set up her own restaurant in the Langa Township. The Lelapa Restaurant is now a thriving business offering traditional local cuisine and serving up a slice of township life.
SKRUM, Eswatini (former Swaziland)
This charity combines inspirational rugby coaching for local children with a health education programme that aims to tackle the high rates of HIV/AIDS infection in Eswatini. The SKRUM project offers many orphans and vulnerable children hope for the future and a chance to develop their life skills.
School donations, Pacific Islands
Edwin Doran Sports Tours donates to every school that hosts a touring side. Regularly, visiting sports travel groups also raise funds themselves, which they hand over to host schools, or make a donation of sporting equipment.
